What kind of gas mileage could I expect from a 2WD V6 3.0 Ford Ranger with automatic tranny?
I'm just curious to see what kind of gas mileage I could expect from the following type of Ford Ranger.
V6 3.0 (2005-2009)
2WD Automatic
Standard cab (NOT THE KING CAB WITH ROOM BEHIND THE SEATS)
I've checked the fueleconomy.gov site, but sometimes I think they just let crazed apes post their mileage over there. Again, I'm just looking for the mileage for the exact model Ranger mentioned above. Also, what size gas tanks do these model Rangers have anyway?
If you got over 20 mpg, you could consider yourself pretty lucky. The "three-point-slow" gets pretty bad fuel economy in the Ranger. I suspect it has more to do with the aerodynamics and gearing of your truck than anything. Remember, they used to run the 3.0 V6 in the Ford Taurus, and 30 mpg was common. Of course, the car was shaped like a squashed Easter egg from 1996-2006, not a boxy truck.
Your automatic transmission will squash fuel efficiency a little, too. Automatic Rangers typically have "shorter" rear end gears to compensate for the slower takeoff characteristics of the automatic gearbox. Makes for faster stoplight takeoff, but worse highway mileage because it keeps your revs slightly higher.
FYI, I think they quit making the 3.0 for 2009 and up. It really didn't offer much more power than the 2.3 Duratec four-cylinder, and given how much worse the fuel economy was, it was starting to be seen as a worthless option.
